#HASHTAGS: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE

Ever since Instagram hit it big, there has been one huge debate: how many hashtags are too much? That all stopped once Instagram put a block on adding more than 30 hashtags. Yes, hashtags can make your feed look cluttered but please don't be mistaken, you need them. Hashtags are crucial to the growth and security of your Instagram profile and can directly affect the overall sales that come straight from your social media accounts. Adding irrelevant hashtags can make you look pushy and desperate, so I advise you to use ones that are relevant to your target market. Who is your target customer anyway? If they're a girl age 18-30 there are hashtags you can use to get their attention versus the hashtags you would use, for example, women with children!

In my field, I get so many questions about hashtags: how many should I use? Which ones should I use? Why do I need them? Where do I put them?

So, let's set the record straight, shall we?

Hashtags are needed.

Why? Hashtags filter Instagram's images into each relevant section. Consider hashtags a "collection" of images that fall under a certain name. So, if I use hashtag "food", my image will fall under a huge category of food images. Make sense? It helps people find you!

Hashtags can be added at a later time.

If you post an image outside of your normal posting time and find that it gets no engagement, come back at a later time and add hashtags in the comments section of that image. It does not matter when you add the hashtags. Images are shown at the top of that category when the hashtags are added!

Where do I put the hashtags?

Please do not put your hashtags in your caption. It can look messy and downright desperate. Add your caption and then go back, add a comment, and put your hashtags in the comment.

Can hashtags be property of anyone?

No. No one can take ownership of any hashtags, legally speaking. You are free to use any hashtag you like provided you do so with gusto and respect for the person who invented it. If you're a business owner, I advise you to not jump on another business owner's specific hashtag to steal their customers. That's just not nice!
